KUANTAN, April 27 - Continuous efforts from public authorities to improve procedures in bauxite mining has continued with National Awareness Workshop On The Implementation Of The International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code (With Special Focus On Cargoes That May Liquefy, Bauxite).
The four-day workshop, which began on April 25 in The Zenith Hotel, organized by Kuantan Port Authority together with Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Marine Department was inaugurated by Managing Director of Kuantan Port Authority; Dato while UMP was represented by Director, Centre for Earth Resources Research and Management (CERRM), Dr. Muzamir Hasan.
The objective of organizing this workshop is to provide guidance and specific guideline to public authorities and also to the bauxite mine’s operator on safe working procedure. In addition to that, this workshop also aims on developing more effective procedures using IMSBC Code which related to bauxite’s export using vessel.
UMP’s involvement is through a preliminary study conducted by Dr. Muzamir Hasan entitled "Geotechnical and Morphological Properties of Kuantan Bauxite, In-situ and Stockpile Samples from Bukit Goh & Gebeng ' that contribute in developing standard operating procedure (SOP) to ensure sustainable bauxite mining in Pahang. He has also been invited by the organizers to present his findings in this workshop.
Besides briefed by leading experts on IMSBC Code, participants also brought to visit Central Laboratory and Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory in UMP where they are given the opportunity to learn techniques used to analyze bauxite samples.
